I am obsessed with my freaky purple guineas. They are also as annoying as can be and are the bane of my, and the rest of the farm's, existence. And probably the neighbors'.
Although hatched and raised commercially, guinea fowl are not domesticated birds like chickens and ducks. Even though they have been raised with them since they were day-old keets, and live with the rest of the flock, they stick together and to themselves, and are kind of bullies. They may be getting kicked out of the coop to live that free-range life soon.
They have no names, as I have no idea what gender they are.
Guinea fowl are known to be annoying because they are not domesticated (I can't catch one to hold it for anything), they are dumb, and they are loud.
However, their drawbacks are also why they are kept - they are extremely good at foraging and can eat hundreds of ticks a day.Â
They also make good alert systems due to being dumb, noisy weirdos. They do tend to over-react to everything, though, and as such the rest of the flock has alarm fatigue.
Guineas are extremely good at flying and enjoy flying up on top of the fence, or on top of the barn, and screaming in triumph/terror. This means they often get into places where they shouldn't and won't be caught or corralled back home for days. They just scream until then.
Even though they are almost a year old, they have not started laying eggs, and I hear they make horrible brooders and mothers anyway. How are these things not extinct?
Have you ever seen anything so pretty andyetalso weird looking?
